Solsikkeprogrammet – The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme: How It All Started

At Evnia, we firmly believe that it is our duty to give back to society. It is part of our ethos, our filotimo way of operating. We believe that we have a responsibility towards one another, and we strive to find people and organisations who share the same values as us and support them in their work.
Solsikkeprogrammet – The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme is one of these organisations.

As most great ideas, The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme was born out of a necessity. It all started back in 2016 when staff at Gatwick Airport realised that they were good at helping people with disabilities, but they did not know how to help those with hidden disabilities. When trying to find a visual cue that could help represent a hidden disability, they came up with the sunflower; a bright flower that symbolises positivity and hope.

Since then, the sunflower lanyard has become more and more recognisable. When people choose to wear it, it means that they choose to signal to others that they might need more time, help or just some understanding. More businesses and companies have joined the scheme, creating supportive spaces where everyone can feel safe and seen.

With the slogans “Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there” and “making the invisible, visible” Solsikkeprogrammet – the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme has been raising awareness on non-visible disabilities, informing the public of their existence and encouraging us to be considerate and kind.

Solsikkeprogrammet – the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme is also here to remind us that having a disability can come in various forms and it is our shared responsibility to be vigilant and take care of each other.
