Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day established by the United Nations to promote and enhance the accessibility of girls and women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The theme of International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2026 is “Synergizing AI, Social Science, STEM and Finance: Building Inclusive Futures for Women and Girls.”
Despite progress in education, women are significantly underrepresented in fields such as engineering, artificial intelligence, and leadership roles in scientific institutions.
Globally, women represent roughly 35 % of STEM graduates and even lower percentages in high-tech sectors, illustrating enduring disparities in access, funding and career progression.
These gaps are a reminder that STEM is not a fair game for women whose potential is underutilised.
Increasing women’s participation in STEM will strengthen innovation by bringing diverse perspectives, enhancing creativity, and improving the quality and impact of research.
Let’s all work towards the accomplishment of this goal!
Closing the gender gap matters not only for fairness, but also for the quality, relevance and impact of science, technology and innovation.
