These were the words of Maria Clara Martin, Greece’s UNCHR representative back in 2021 and half a decade later they are still –unfortunately- as relevant as ever.
Constant tensions and military conflict around the word causes displacement; as of the end of June 2025, according to UNCHR 117.3 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced. A whopping 71% of refugees are hosted by low-income and middle-income countries.
UNCHR works relentlessly to ensure that every person who is forced to flee their home due to war is protected and receives help to rebuild their lives with safety and dignity. They provide shelter, medical assistance, food and help children continue their education.
